Bupati of Nabire
‘In the future, we hope that investors will help us to train our people’

abire is located on the north coast of Papua in the centre of the great Cendrawasih Bay. It is half
lowlands and half mountains.
“Nabire has vast potential for investment within agriculture, fisheries, animal husbandry, mining, forestry and tourism,” says Bupati Anselmus Petrus.

He is leading a three-part project that encapsulates his vision for the development of the kabupaten. “Our first mission is to empower the people,” he says. “The second is to make the people live healthily, and the third is to improve our human resources.

“Our hope is that in the future our people will become prosperous from the results generated out of their
own resources. For now, the question is: How do we exploit our existing
resources?”

At the moment, one way that the local people make money is to go to the river and prospect for gold. They then sell it to buyers. In order to exploit this potential to the full they require direct investment.
The regional government of Nabire has recognised that outside investment is needed. It is ready to help investors build their businesses in the kabupaten. “We want to invite investors to come here. We will assist them in exploiting the province’s resources so that the welfare of our people can improve,” says Mr Petrus.

“We are ready to lend a hand to every investor so that together we can develop Nabire into a prosperous region. We are happy to receive investors and the local government will guarantee fair relations between them and the local people,” assures Mr Petrus.

“Land matters are considered to be subject to traditional law,” he explains. “Therefore, the local community and the investors will need to reach an agreement in relation to compensation. In the future, we hope that investors will help us to train our people.”
